Purpose: Utah Valley Rides is a volunteer transportation program whose mission is to assist senior citizens, people with disabilities, and individuals with low income to expand their independence and community access by providing safe, reliable rides within the Provo and Orem area.
Setting: Utah Valley Rides is located in the Utah Paratransit office located at 815 South Freedom Blvd. #300 in Provo, Utah. The volunteer driver’s route will start at the office where a van will be assigned to the driver and a manifest (schedule for the day) will be discussed. The driver will then proceed into the Provo and Orem community following that manifest.
Function: The main function of the volunteer drivers is to drive senior citizens to destinations within the Provo and Orem area. These destinations usually are for shopping, doctors’ appointments, or other places like banks or senior centers.
Volunteer Schedule: Customers may only schedule rides on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Volunteer drivers need to be available during these hours for any shift they volunteer for. Drivers may select one or more days a week or one or more days a month to serve. Partial shifts [1/2 day] are not available.
Training: Drivers will receive an orientation on the purpose, scope and policies of the Utah Valley Rides program. They will also be coached on basic safe driving procedures necessary for driving the elderly and handicapped in a van. Additional instructions will include: the proper use of the wheelchair lift and wheelchair ramp; how to properly secure wheelchairs and those in wheelchairs inside the vehicle; how to use the CB radio, how to complete the daily paperwork; what to do in case of an emergency; and a few customer service tips. Management will ride along with each volunteer at least twice during your training period for observations and additional coaching. Once trained – drivers will be unsupervised as they go about their duties.
